I have owned this model and several of the similar units with plastic (vs. the metal) housings. They are a bit unique not only because of the Vornado "vortex" fan, but also because they do not have a glowing, red-hot heating element. They produce warm air and circulate it nicely, and they can heat a small to medium sized room given a bit of time.
Some other space heaters excel at directional heat- we have a "dish" heater that has no fan, but is very warm (much warmer than the Vornado) when you sit in front of it (it DOES have red hot, glowing coils that reflect off of the dish). The Vornados are better at area heating in a more gradual way. So if you are looking for something that provides a quick, dramatic warmth, then the Vornado will probably disappoint you somewhat. If you are looking for a heater that circulates warm air and will gradually heat a room, then you may prefer this to "directional" heaters.
The bad news is that the electronics (switches, thermostats, etc.) on these units are REALLY crappy. I have had several fail after a season or two of use. This "touch-stone" version has a heavy metal housing, a thicker power cord and perhaps even a better fan, but after 2 years, the thermostat is useless and the thing heats only sporadically and unpredictably. Two other similar Vornado models with the less expensive plastic housings have also failed- one will not power-up at all and the other also has a defective thermostat.
I also have a Vornado humidifier with electronics that failed after less than one season (it will only run on full blast all the time, and there is no "humidity" control anymore).
My only other Vornado product is a floor fan, which has worked great for many years (it's only control is a rheostat to set the fan speed variably).
So my experience with Vornado is that the fans in all of their units are pretty durable and superior(given their size) at circulating air- be it warm or cool. But the electronics in these units are nowhere near the same quality. I am not the only reviewer here who notes that they fail- way too often- given that you will generally pay more for heaters and other appliances with the Vornado brand.
I am looking to replace mine with something else. Perhaps a quartz or ceramic heating unit. The Vornados are good while they last, but they REALLY need to up the quality and durability of the electronics.

How is it that Amazon is selling this product (albeit through a partner vendor) for $50 over MSRP?
I've not received the product yet so I'll give it 4 stars so as not to mess up the average compiled here.

I must agree with other reviewers that say these break quickly. I have owned 3 of them and none of them worked for even one year. I threw the first one out and returned the other two to be repaired by the company because I still had my receipt and they were under warranty. They work well when they work, but they are too expensive to only work for a short time. I had one break after 5 months. I wrote the date on it so I knew how long it took to break. I will never purchase a Vornado heater again.

I ordered this products to supplement the in-wall electric heaters in the room above my garage. It works well to keep the heat even and I like the digital controls.
